African Roundtable: Selected Topics from an Emerging Continent

On Safari!
April-May 2017
African Roundtable: Selected Topics from an Emerging Continent (OSHER at Dartmouth)

I will be co-leading a class at Dartmouth College with Norman Miller (Professor Emeritus at the Geisel School of Medicine).

Much of our fascination with Africa today starts with the human story, the evolution of our ancestors, the "invention" of medicine, art and religion, and the contemporary relations between humans, animals and their environment. Africa is also a complex 21st-century continent and our focus will include two sessions on modern politics and economic development including foreign aid issues.

Drawing on local expertise, the course co-directors have selected six specific themes that illustrate these universal topics: (1) African Prehistory and the Modern Fossil Discoveries in South Africa; (2) African Traditional Medicine and Cross Cultural Healing; (3) Indigenous Religion, Spiritism and Witchcraft, as seen in African art; (4) Contemporary Issues of African Wildlife and Conservation; (5) the Role of Foreign Aid and Non-Governmental Organizations; and (6) Key Political Trends in Today's Africa.

Invited guests include Dr. Jeremy DeSilva (Anthropology), Ambassador Roland Kuchel (Zambia and Eastern Europe), Dr. Nelson Kasfir (Political Science).  Read More

Morocco by Donkey!

The best way to get around the holy city of Moulay Idriss! Donkeys are used to transport everything - people, shopping, luggage, beds, fridges, and furniture. Due to the hilly nature of the streets, it's the only transportation game in town.

Dar Zerhoune, the award-winning inn in the heart of the city, sponsors a community project offering free veterinary care for the local donkeys each month.  Read More

Sunrise over Tembe Elephant Park

Sunrise Over Tembe
This is my beautiful picture of the sunrise over the sand forest. I recently traveled to Tembe Elephant Park to research and photograph Africa's largest elephants, the giant tuskers. Tembe is located in South Africa between Zululand and Mozambique.

The Elephant's Euphonium

A new book coming soon! The story of Isilo, one of the last great tuskers of Africa, is told through the eyes of his young son Simon. This youthful, fun-loving elephant just wants to play and create mischief. But as he grows up, his mother takes him on a journey to find out what happened to his father. Follow along as Simon learns the fate of his father and discovers his own destiny.

What to read when traveling to South Africa

National Geographic recommends reading "When Eagles Roar: The Amazing Journey of an African Wildlife Adventurer" before traveling on safari to South Africa in 2016. Great for the armchair traveler as well!
